Jim Guarnaccio

Jim Guarnaccio has a lifelong passion for movement and has devoted his life to the exploration and study of Martial Arts. His dedication has instilled in him a deep appreciation for discipline, health, and compassion for the human body. As a martial artist, Jim has trained and hosts instructorships with renowned organizations such as the Minnesota Kali Group, Francis Fong Academy, and the Shaolin Center. He finds movement both fascinating and enriching, believing it to be a powerful medicine for life.


In addition to martial arts, climbing is an important part of Jim's life and he has scaled routes from Mexico to the Canadian Rockies. His commitment to physical and mental fitness is reflected in his extensive training, holding (or have held) certifications like CSCS, FMS-2, FRCms, StrongFirst, and Precision Nutrition. Jim is passionate about helping others achieve their goals through self expression, movement, and holistic wellness approaches.

Lead Instructor

Nick Wintergerst

Nick Wintergerst has dedicated most of his life to the pursuit of martial arts mastery. Beginning with Tae Kwon Do in his youth, he has since amassed over 20 years of experience across a diverse range of disciplines, including Kali, Doce Pares Escrima, Panantukan, Muay Thai, Silat, Jeet Kune Do Concepts, Capoeira, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Nick holds a Level 1.2 instructor ranking under Guro Rick Faye of the Minnesota Kali Group. 
 

For over 15 years, Nick has been sharing his passion and knowledge as a martial arts instructor. He emphasizes a balance between form and function, ensuring that his students not only learn techniques but also feel accomplished and fulfilled by the work they put in. Nick's teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive and rewarding environment where students can challenge themselves, grow, and leave each class with a sense of achievement.

Ben Bridwell

Asst. Instructor

Ben Bridwell began his martial arts journey in 2004, training in the Hung Gar Kung Fu system under the guidance of SiFu Steve Kleppe. His passion to this traditional art form has propelled him into the competitive arena, where he has earned multiple medals in both national and world Taolu (Kung Fu forms) competitions. His commitment to excellence sees him continuing to compete locally and internationally, showcasing his passion and skill.
 

In addition to his accomplishments in Kung Fu, Ben has played a pivotal role in the founding of Lyceum Martial Arts Group, where he fosters a welcoming and collaborative space for martial artists of all backgrounds. Under the mentorship of Jim Guarnaccio and Nick Wintergerst, he has explored and trained in a variety of disciplines, further enriching his martial arts expertise.
 

Ben’s enthusiasm extends beyond the martial arts. As a former cardio kickboxing instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he inspired countless individuals to embrace physical fitness. Today, he remains committed to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, sharing his excitement and knowledge with others. Whether through martial arts or fitness, Ben believes in the transformative power of movement and encourages everyone to pursue their best selves, both physically and mentally.

Class Descriptions

Weaponry

This class emphasizes the rich and intricate Filipino martial art of Kali, covering double stick, single stick, stick and dagger, and dagger techniques. The curriculum focuses on developing coordination, rhythm, timing, and body mechanics while promoting bilateral dexterity. Training progresses from structured drills to dynamic free-flow exercises, ensuring both precision and fluidity. We also explore Chinese martial arts weaponry, including the straight sword, broadsword, staff, and spear, providing a comprehensive study of both traditional, esoteric, functional weapons​​.

Striking

Our Striking classes are an immersive experience, integrating diverse martial arts techniques to create a well-rounded approach. You’ll learn the cunning strategies and close-quarters tactics of Panantukan, the nimble footwork and precision of French Savate, the explosive power and conditioning of Muay Thai, the practicality of Jun Fan Gung Fu, and sticky hands of Wing Chun. Classes are highly interactive, focusing on partner drills and free flow exercises that sharpen your striking skills and deliver a well rounded workout. This dynamic mix fosters an understanding of various arts while keeping the training exciting and physically rewarding​​.

Grappling

The Grappling class draws from a diverse blend of traditional and modern influences. With the base coming from MKG Grappling Blend, this class draws from classic grappling arts such as BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), Judo, and Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW). We also explore grappling principles from Tai Chi, Silat, and the Filipino art of Kali. Students will experience both standing and ground techniques, working through the different ranges of combat to seamlessly transition in and out of grappling situations. This comprehensive approach highlights the versatility and strategic application of grappling across various martial arts​​.

Blend

Our Blend class delivers a comprehensive mixed martial arts experience, integrating key elements from Kali, Thai Boxing, Savate, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Jun Fan Gung Fu, Panantukan, and Mixed Grappling through the lens of Jeet Kune Do concepts. The program emphasizes developing essential attributes such as speed, strength, and endurance through simultaneous cross-training, promoting effective and lasting skill assimilation. With a balance of curriculum-based learning and conceptual growth, classes also include a focus on sensitivity training like Chi Sao, Push Hands, Hubud, and Pummeling. This holistic approach ensures that practitioners become adaptable and well-rounded martial artists.

Experience a high-energy, interactive workout in our Thai Pad Conditioning class we use drill rounds (inspired by MKG), Long Counts, Open Rounds (Pad Holder Driven or Free Cal), and other dynamic options to fulfill your kickboxing desires. This class is designed to challenge both your stamina and technique, providing a full-body conditioning experience that leaves you feeling powerful and accomplished. With a “challenge by choice” approach, students can customize the intensity of their training, ensuring that everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes, has the opportunity to push their personal limits while maintaining proper technique and safety. Expect a session filled with non-stop action, sweat, and a supportive vibe that drives you to be your best.​​
